The Mason City Public Library Youth Services offers a variety of programs and services for children birth to 11 years old.  We always have something going on at the library, so please stop by and see us in the Mason City Room or call us at 641.421.3668.

Bridges Icon Kids

National Geographic’s site for young readers is one of the best resources for information on the Net about the world, its people, and its wildlife. Not only can you read the newest edition of this magazine on-line, you can check out the contests, polls, games and even virtual adventures.

Modeled on the bedtime story tradition, Bedtime Math is a daily blog that offers daily math problems instead of stories. Math problems are offered in three levels of challenge (preschool, kindergarten through first or second grade, and second grade and up).

The Library of Congress puts the story back in history through images of primary source documents, prints, photographs, maps, recordings and other materials from the past. Along with the fascinating information about people, places and things of interest to kids of all ages, there are songs to listen to, a Krazy Kat cartoon to watch, a scavenger hunt and other fun things to do.

Discovery Kids inspires kids to explore the awesome world around them and satisfy their curiosity with innovative games, activities, quizzes and articles.

Created by the BBC, Walking with Dinosaurs features individual pages featuring interesting facts, images and statistics on particular dinosaurs.

The travel itinerary provides links to background information and a chance to read about a country's people and culture. There is even the opportunity to correspond and talk with people in their native language with the help of instant translation.

Sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History, the Ology website is a playground for children interested in all areas of science. Some of the subjects covered include dinosaurs, marine biology, genetics, astronomy. They may also choose a username and password to be able to collect ology cards with more information about special topics. Games, crafts, experiments, and interviews with scientists are all part of the variety of activities included.

Climate Kids offers kids clear answers to questions on global climate change through sections on weather, air, the ocean, fresh water, carbon, energy, plants and animals and technology. Includes educational games, activities, crafts, videos and information on green careers.

Learn interesting facts about animals around the world. The site includes animal videos such as a rare pygmy hippopotamus at an Australian zoo and a wildlife blog.
