Bogardus Blueprints

Blueprints by local architect E.R. Bogardus

E.R. Bogardusbogardus obit

E.R. Bogardus (1850-1927) came to Mason City as a child. As a young man he worked as a farmer; later, he operated a lumberyard. A self-taught architect and contractor, he designed and built many of Mason City's most notable buildings.  These buildings are only a few of his many designs.

Decker House

The Decker House, built in 1894, was originally owned by I.W. Keerl. It was later bought by Jacob E. Decker, owner of the Decker and Sons meat packing plant. Having gone through a number of owners, it is currently (2002) being renovated as a bed and breakfast. (119 2nd St. SE).  Decker House Pictures

Cherry House

The Cherry House, also known as the Rattay House, was built in 1905. Although it originally stood on North Delaware Avenue, it was relocated to 6th Street in 1967 and some changes were made to the building. (121 6th St. NE)  Cherry House Pictures

Klipto Building

Bogardus designed this building in 1908 for the LeMars Printing Company. In 1924 Klipto Loose-Leaf Binder Company moved in and occupied the building for many years. (15-17 N. Delaware).  Klipto Building Pictures

Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church

Built in 1913, the Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church was one of Bogardus's later works and was one of two churches he designed in that period. It shows a strong Mediterranean influence, markedly different from his earlier buildings. Apparently the architect made several changes to the design of the entryway, as can be seen by the erasures on the drawing. (1615 N. Delaware).  Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church Pictures
